Le symbole OM

The OM symbol

The symbol OM (or AUM) originates from the Hindu religion. It has a profound and complex meaning. It is often said that the OM sign "holds all the secrets of the universe" and that it is "everything and nothing."

The syllable "Om" is sacred. It is composed of three phonemes: A, U, and M. The combination of these three sounds creates a profound vibration that allows one to connect with the universe. AUM is infinite. It represents the cycle of life that never ends.

- A represents the beginning and symbolizes Brahma, the creator god.

- U represents life and symbolizes Vishnu, the protective god.

- M represents death and symbolizes Shiva, the destroyer god.

The symbol "OM" has 5 parts (photo) which represent the individual in their entirety.

1. The state of wakefulness : this is the state we are in when our consciousness is turned outwards, towards others, towards discovery. It is the conscious part of our psychology.

2. The dream state : This is the state we are in when our consciousness is turned inward. It represents the world we experience through our dreams. It is our subconscious.

3. The unconscious state : this is the state one is in during deep sleep. One has neither desires nor dreams. One is in "nothingness." This state represents both the end and the beginning of something.

4. The state of absolute consciousness : this is the ultimate point of concentration, of absolute reality, the goal of all spiritual research. It is Nirvana.

5. The Maya (the veil) : The Maya represents the veil, the illusion that prevents us from accessing the state of absolute consciousness and hinders our spiritual progress. It can symbolize the ego.

IN BRIEF

The OM symbol represents everything: creation, protection, and destruction. Chanting OM allows our vibration to connect with the universe. In yoga and meditation, chanting OM helps us connect with our inner selves. Physically, chanting OM vibrates our rib cage, brain, and entire nervous system, providing a deep massage of nerve cells and improving blood circulation. Finally, psychologically, chanting OM brings concentration and serenity.
