Les Doshas : Vata, Pitta, Kapha

The Doshas: Vata, Pitta, Kapha

Vata, Pitta, and Kapha are the three vital energies of Ayurvedic medicine . What exactly are they, and how do they help identify and treat imbalances in the body?

In short:

These are the three energies that sustain our bodies. Each of us possesses these three energies, but in varying proportions. Therefore, each of us has a unique "doshic constitution."

That's why we are all different, in terms of character, temperament, physical appearance, needs, etc. To find out your doshic constitution, you can simply take one of the many tests available on the internet.

Each dosha has its own characteristics:

VATA = AIR + ETHER
PITTA = FIRE + WATER
KAPHA = WATER + EARTH

The Doshas are formed from the 5 elements:

- Air

- Fire⠀

- The Earth⠀

- Water

- Ether (corresponds to the notion of “space” or extent)

Every element in the universe is made up of these five elements: objects, plants, the moon, snow… And our bodies are no exception. Every individual therefore has these five elements within them.

These 5 elements combine to form 3 major energies: the famous Doshas.

- 𝐕𝐀𝐓𝐀: air + ether⠀

- 𝐏𝐈𝐓𝐓𝐀: fire + water⠀

- 𝐊𝐀𝐏𝐇𝐀: water + earth⠀

VATA = a rather cold, dry, light energy. What it manifests in the individual: creativity, enthusiasm, freedom, generosity, joy, vitality.

PITTA = hot, intense, humid energy. What it manifests in the individual: ambition, concentration, confidence, courage, thirst for knowledge, happiness, intelligence.

KAPHA = cold, heavy, oily, soft energy. What it manifests in the individual: concentration, compassion, faith, accomplishment, patience, stability, tenderness.

When these energies are balanced in our body, we are healthy. But often, this balance is disrupted, leading to discomfort (anxiety, digestive problems, fatigue, etc.). This is why it is very important to know our doshic constitution in order to restore balance to a dosha that is showing signs of imbalance.
